Why 2026 Is the Perfect Time to Train as a Reformer Pilates Instructor

A temporal supply and demand imbalance is a sophisticated way to describe what we saw in our studio owners' survey earlier this year (46% stated their biggest concern was a lack of quality instructors).

In simple terms, there is no shortage of people who want to attend classes; however, many studio owners have told us they do not have enough qualified Reformer Pilates instructors to meet that demand.

The reasons behind this are straightforward. It takes time to become qualified.

To access a Reformer Level 3 qualification, you first need Matwork Level 3, which requires a minimum of 40 hours of work and two days in a studio. You can expect to commit a similar amount of time to the Reformer qualification itself. This does not include the additional hours for practice, observation and aligning with the teaching methods of your chosen studio.

In other words, it is a meaningful commitment.

Then there is the cost and, just as importantly, the lack of clarity around how different training courses operate.

You may find yourself asking questions such as:

  • What is the difference between a £1,000 course and a £5,000 course?

  • Is online training acceptable?

  • What is the difference between certified and qualified?

  • Which official body should you train with?

The wide range of training providers is actually a positive sign of a healthy and growing market. Having options at different price points helps the industry evolve and allows more people to enter the profession.

The good news is that this is an investment with real return. Very few professional qualifications allow you to begin earning relatively soon after completing your training.

Demand for classes continues to grow rapidly, fuelled by increased awareness on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where reformer workouts have become highly visible and aspirational.

At the same time, the studio landscape is expanding. New boutique studios are opening, luxury multi-site gym groups are adding reformer studios, and hotels and wellness destinations are incorporating Pilates into their offerings.

Importantly, the appeal of Pilates is also widening. Clients are increasingly looking for exercise that improves strength, mobility, posture and long-term wellbeing, rather than simply high-intensity workouts. This means Reformer Pilates is attracting a broad audience, from young professionals to older clients looking to maintain mobility and prevent injury.

For instructors, this creates a wide range of potential career paths, including:

  • teaching in boutique studios

  • private client work

  • corporate wellness programmes

  • retreats and workshops

  • online teaching and content creation

Alongside this growth, the industry itself is maturing. Expectations surrounding instructor quality are rising and, rather than seeing this as a regulatory burden, we believe it is essential for the long-term health of the profession.

Recognised industry bodies have published recommendations that outline a scope of practice (full details at https://thesocietyforthepilatesmethod.com/)  encompassing the entire Pilates system, from its history to its application in group settings, and a framework for ongoing professional development.

They have also introduced frameworks for ongoing professional development, helping ensure that instructors continue to develop their knowledge and skills throughout their careers.

This scope of practice has implications for individual insurance cover and is an essential step in maintaining standards across studios. A strong, well-regulated industry protects everyone and helps reduce the presence of poorly trained practitioners. Studios that invest in their instructors will stand out and thrive.

If any of this resonates with you, we would love to hear from you.
